NATIONAL MUSTARD DAY

It’s coming! Saturday, August 4, is this year’s grand mustard celebration on Main Street in Mount Horeb. We have lined up two great bands – Clear Blue Betty and the Red Hot Horn Dawgs. We will also announce the winner of our $5,000 SEEDS OF PASSION writing contest.

Bring the whole family. We have mustard games galore, Culver’s Mustard Custard, free Oscar Mayer Hot Dogs (free when adorned with mustard, that is), and your chance to audition at the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile in the “Sing the Jingle, Be A Star” contest.

The Balloonatic, Mr. Hocus, and juggler extraordinare Andy Martello will be there, along with the POUPON U Accordion Band.

Proceeds from hot dog donations and games all benefit the Mount Horeb Troll Skate Park.

Thanks to our sponsors, Grey Poupon, French’s, Silver Spring Gardens, Beaverton Foods, Rothschild Berry Farm, Barhyte Specialty Foods, Plochman’s, Wisconsin Wilderness, Delicae Gourmet, Snyder’s of Hanover, Oscar Mayer, Culver’s Frozen Custard, and Gardner/Sara Lee Baking.

More info coming in a few weeks.

Travelocity Editor's Pick Award

The Mustard Museum is an Editor’s Pick on the Travelocity/WindowSeat website:
http://svc.travelocity.com/promos/localsecrets_2007_wisconsin/0,,TRAVELOCITY,00.html

Yippee!

Pardon Me?

The Curator has nothing to say about GW’s pardon of his condimentally challenged pal Scooter Libby. Nothing at all. Not even a passing reference to their recent midnight party at which K. Rove and D. Cheney slathered the entire White House staff with mayonnaise in preparation for next year’s anticipated smear campaign. Nope. The Curator will refrain. The Curator does not want to get in trouble.

JULY AWARDS

john curtis
John Curtis, far right, and friends

Our July Golden Mustard Award goes to John Curtas, restaurant critic for Nevada Public Radio in Las Vegas. John not only has a keen palate but a wicked sense of humor, too. He was also our dining companion at L’Atelier de Joel Robouchon in Las Vegas a few weeks ago. (That’s Mrs. Mustard, the Curator, Chef Steven Benjamin, and John Curtas at L’Atelier.) You can listen to John’s sassy reviews of the Las Vegas dining scene at http://www.knpr.org/foodforthought/listNEW.cfm.

We followed John’s advice and also ate at Corsa Cucina at the Wynn where chef Stephen Kalt works his magic. The Curator is still swooning over the lobster gnocchi. It’s not on the menu but is a frequent special. Call ahead to see if it’s available because you have to try it. Reservations are a good idea – 1-702-770-2040.

walgreens

Our July Yucky Ketchup Award goes to the mega-pharmacy chain Walgreen’s for its “Homemade” ice cream. You know how the Curator bristle’s when ice cream makers call their factory-made products “homemade.” Wanna have some fun? Go to your local Walgreen’s, grab a carton of their “Homemade” ice cream, and take it to the manager. Then pepper the poor slob with questions like, “In whose home is this made,” or “Is Walgreen’s being truthful about this product?” “Do you know what the penalties for fraud are in this state?”

MUSTARD BITS FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE JAR

mustard tinsMUSEUM UPDATE

There are now 4,781 mustards in the Mustard Museum collection. We have also acquired several new” old tins (see picture).

Will it never end? We hope not. Are we on your summer travel agenda to visit the Mustard Museum?

HELP!

Wisconsin Public Radio’s Brian Bull is doing a story on the Mustard Museum and National Mustard Day. He needs some video footage of any of our previous National Mustard Celebrations (he needs about 30 seconds of good audio). If you have any camcorder footage that you can share with Brian, contact him via email at [email protected].

WHERE’S THE CURATOR?

Barry will be a featured speaker at the Colorado Bar Association’s Food Law seminar on Friday, July 13, in Denver. For more information, visit the Colorado Bar web site: http://cobar.org/calendar/eventdetail.cfm?EventID=LI071308L
